Not only does what you say in the interview matter, but your appearance does as well. Wearing the wrong outfit could seriously hurt your chances at landing your dream position. Here are some tips on how to dress for the part and how to incorporate your style as well!
Why Does Outfit Matter?
The overall goal of your interview outfit is to make a good first impression to your employer. It also shows effort and your preparedness skills which lets the interviewer know you are serious about this role. Lastly, it boosts your confidence by making you feel good about yourself and what you are saying in your interview which results in higher chances of hearing back.
1. Research the Work Culture
Different work environments require different dress codes. Make sure you research the company and their values to see exactly how to dress for the part. For example, a law firm that emphasizes a serious work ethic will most likely require a more formal and conservative attire whereas a company that emphasizes a chill work environment will expect business casual attire. Some companies also don’t require much professionalism in their outfits as well so it’s also important to not overdress.
2. Ensure Outfit is Up to Par
After figuring out what environment your company has, its time to pick an outfit. After narrowing down your options, make sure the clothes are ironed and lint/pet hair free. Make sure they fit appropriately and do not have holes and/or stains. Don’t wear extremely heavy makeup or very strong perfume/cologne.
3. Style to Your Liking
Business outfits do not have to be boring! For more conservative styles, spice it up with your favorite colors. A pop of color in your heels or even a cute belt can make an outfit go a long way. Playing around with suit color combinations can also liven up a boring closet. For more laid back business outfits, play around with cardigan and blouse or button up and pants combinations. Don’t be afraid to accessorize your outfit whether it be a statement necklace or a pair of non prescription glasses.
